Posture & Health – Straighten Up

Posture, you’ve probably heard the term ‘stop slouching’ before. Whether it was something your teacher said, or a request from your mother, someone at some point has tried to correct your posture. But what happens when there isn’t anyone looking out for you? The truth is, if you aren’t ever taught what proper posture is, then you would never know you’re doing damage by just standing or sitting simply by the way you hold your body.

Posture is something we all deal with

POSTURE – SITTING DOWN ON THE JOB

One factor of our posture comes down to the fact there’s been an increase of technology in every day life. Many of us are stuck in front of a computer for our jobs, spending hours in uncomfortable chairs, using tools that aren’t ergonomically sound, and putting added pressure on our spines and necks. An important part of the average desk job comes down to repetitive motion – using your dominant hand to answer the phone, the way you rest your arms when typing, and even the way you fidget can take its toll.

SCROLLING THROUGH

Even our leisure time is adding to the pain of poor posture. Handheld devices are often used below our natural line of sight. This means we are constantly looking down. Whether we are scrolling through Instagram, playing Candy Crush, or simply texting our friends back, we are putting so much pressure on our necks and consequently our spines.

Technology is the most common cause of posture issues.

POSTURE – TAKE A STAND

Even if you don’t have the influx of technology in your life, you’re likely struggling with your posture when you’re standing. Hunched shoulders, bent knees, uneven hips, and even cocking your head to the side are all ways your posture may be compromised. It’s important to learn how to hold your body correctly because not doing so will result in pain, tension, and imbalance – and when you have prolonged bad posture the pain can become chronic and life can be incredibly uncomfortable.

Here are a few ways bad posture can affect you:

  • Poor Circulation
  • Impaired Lung Function
  • Constricted Nerves
  • Back Pain
  • Body Aches
  • Muscle Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Jaw Pain
  • Poor Digestion

The list goes on too. From a misaligned spine to severe migraines, your improper posture can hinder the quality of life. Thankfully, there is help.
